When it comes to choosing destinations for school ski trips, Spain has gained popularity, and rightly so; it has some very high mountains and some great winter powder! On a school ski trip to Spain you have two options: you can visit the resorts of the Pyrenees Mountains sandwiched between Spain and France, or you can head further south to the Sierra Nevada mountain range, on the outskirts of the beautiful city of Granada.
Both of Spain's main ski areas offer great winter skiing for school groups. With mountain resorts high above the tree line, snow is almost guaranteed, and snow-making cannons ensure that pistes are in great condition even if the sun tries to melt your downhill ambitions. Mixing it up a bit, resorts offer a wide range of winter sports besides skiing, allowing your school students to have a go at activities like ice skating, tobogganing and snowmobiling. When dusk falls, Spanish hospitality is legendary so you won't have much trouble convincing your pupils to leave the snow behind to enjoy the food awaiting you back at your accommodation. With many schools teaching Spainsh as a MFL, the opportunities for cross curricular teaching are also very attractive to teachers.
The sixteen ski resorts of Pyrenees are more extensive than the more southerly Sierras, the best known being Baqueira-Beret. At Baqueira your students can enjoy gentle nursery slopes close to the lower village, before progressing to well over 2000m and some more challenging blue runs. Pyrenean resorts are within reach by coach, making this form or transport possible for your school skiing trip.
Sierra Nevada is a bit more out in the ski wilderness, but that does not mean you should not visit on a school ski trip. The resort has a long history of hosting world cup ski events, gets enough snow to make it snow-sure in winter, has great facilities, is easy to get to, and is close enough to the historic city of Granada to offer schools more than just a week on the snow.
